Cargo movement via waterways hits 218 MMT in 2025-26, exceeding Maritime India Vision 2030 target.

Cargo movement on India's inland waterways reached 218 million metric tonnes in 2025-26, exceeding the target of 200 million metric tonnes set under the Maritime India Vision 2030. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported that this growth represents a compound annual growth rate of 20.13 percent since 2014-15, when cargo movement was only 29 million metric tonnes. India boasts 111 National Waterways, spanning over 20,187 kilometers across 23 states and four Union Territories. To further enhance this growth, the Ministry is improving the inland waterway network through hydrographic surveys, modern navigation infrastructure, and digital information systems.
