Serbia's Progressive Party loses 14-year hold on power in political shift

In a significant political shift, Serbia's long-time leader Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in the parliamentary elections held yesterday, ending his Serbian Progressive Party's 14-year rule. The opposition movement, led by university students and known as the Students’ List, garnered approximately 2.2 million votes, surpassing Vucic's party, which received around 1.7 million votes. Voter turnout reached about 70 percent, the highest since 2000, with long lines forming at polling stations both in Serbia and among the diaspora. Vucic had recently resigned from the presidency to lead his campaign, following a decline in public support after a tragic incident in 2024 that resulted in significant youth protests.
